Karhu XCD Series

For 30 years, the XCD spirit of winter exploration has run through our blood. The ultimate in lightweight touring and turning, our XCD Series is equally at home on feats like Carter and Bard’s Redline Traverse as it is venturing right from your backyard.

XCD Guide

Blending the XCD design with the success of our wider telemark platforms, the XCD Guide received rave reviews from media, dealers and consumers alike. The Guide stays true to the XCD tradition with full metal edges and the Omnitrak® NoWax® base – the best waxless grip available. For climbing and descending, the Guide’s 78mm waist and fat tip excel in soft snow. Its progressive sidecut and Carbon Powerbands initiate turns quickly, hold a carve and release smoothly from the turn for truly go-anywhere skiing.

ß Dimensions: 109-78-95
ß Lengths: 165, 175, 185, adding 195cm length for Fall 2008
ß Greenlight™ Core
ß Carbon Powerbands

XCD 10TH Mountain

We redesigned the XCD 10TH Mountain last year to make it lighter, quicker and friendlier for turns, and give it greater range to complement the no-hassle touring ability of the Omnitrak® NoWax® base. With a deeper Progressive XCD Sidecut and full metal edges, the 10TH Mountain turns quickly, adding low-angle glades and bowls to its excellent performance on rolling terrain and backcountry trails. We recommend the XCD Traverse boot for the XCD 10TH Mountain.

ß Greenlight™ Core

XCD GT

We renewed our commitment to XCD again this year by redesigning the XCD GT with a new core construction that’s slimmer in profile and lighter in weight. The GT has camber and a half for a true XCD feel and the superior efficiency of the Omnitrak® NoWax® base, and it gets a touch more sidecut for easier turning. Still a classic blend of Nordic and downhill design, the GT will kick, glide and turn with ease. We recommend the XCD Traverse or XCD Tour boots with the XCD GT.

ß Greenlight™ Core

XCD Pinnacle

Redesigned as well this year, the XCD Pinnacle receives the new, lighter core profile. The lightest and narrowest metal edge ski, it remains the most Nordic-minded of the modern XCD Series. Designed for the Nordic skier that wants to start the tour on the groomed and head off into rolling backcountry trails, the Pinnacle balances a track-appropriate tip with a wider overall width and metal edges. Using our renowned Omnitrak® NoWax® base, the Pinnacle works best with the XCD Tour boot.

XCD Traverse

Totally redesigned, this year’s XCD Traverse boot lost bulk and weight and gained a smoother flex for true XCD skiing. Rebuilt from the ground up with felt-lined 3D-Molded Midsoles, a new XCD Lacing system, a powerstrap and a lower and firmer tongue for a closer fit, the XCD Traverse gets warmth from Thinsulate™ and durability from rubber rands that wrap the entire boot. Using a Vibram 75mm Outback sole, the smooth-flexing XCD Traverse matches well with the XCD 10th Mountain and XCD GT skis for an even mix of touring and downhill performance.

ß 3D-Stitched Tongue
ß 3D-Molded Midsole
ß 200g Thinsulate™ Insulation
ß Vibram 75mm Outback Sole

XCD Tour

A system boot with sturdiness, the XCD Tour shares the same redesigned upper features as the Traverse – felt-lined 3D-Molded Midsoles, 3D-Stitched Tongue, powerstrap, High-Wear Rubber Rands and 200g Thinsulate™ -- but with the NNN BC outsole. The XCD Tour combines the NNN BC sole’s excellent touring flex with the upper’s downhill power for an ideal mate to light touring on the XCD GT or Pinnacle skis.

XCD Pole

Our new XCD Pole blends touring and downhill ability like the XCD skis and boots it was designed for. Its 7000-series aluminum shaft and alpine-style basket provide durability, balanced by poling comfort that comes from a cork grip and padded biathlon strap.

ß Lengths: 120 to 160cm, every 5cms

About Karhu

Born and bred in the backcountry, Karhu has led the market in backcountry performance – from recreational touring to telemark and alpine touring – for over thirty years. Two years after its launch in North America, Karhu moved to the forefront of the backcountry experience in 1978 with the birth of the XCD concept. XCD married downhill and Nordic qualities – metal edges, Nordic builds, new sidecuts and cambers capable of touring and turning – in a single ski that became a legend. The ski was christened the XCD, the perfect encapsulation of its purpose, Cross-Country Downhill.

To a larger extent, it opened up a new world of backcountry possibilities and captured the essence of the whole telemark revival, as the nascent sport’s pioneers (Tom Carter, Allan Bard, Ned Gillette, Steve Barnett, Dickie Hall, and others) embraced the innovative new design and discovered new peaks, descents, traverses and adventures only imagined before. Because of XCD, Karhu understands that the turn alone lacks the satisfaction of the earn, and that the tour is enhanced by the thrill of the descent. The heart of the adventure is the blend of the two, and that marriage of styles – that Karhu DNA – will continues to define our brand today, in every product that we make.
