Five of us skied section 12 from Rt 4 to Tin Shanty on Monday, February 11. The total ski is about 13.6 miles, and took us about 6.5 hours. The first part, through Rutland State Forest was great. This section often has thin snow conditions, but it was fine for us. There were several blowdowns and some minor open water, but this first part of the section is nice rolling terrain. The second part is snowmobile trail, and when skiing from north to south includes two long "grind it out" sorts of hills. It was chilly (about 4 degrees F.) and windy early in the day (we started about 9:15 AM), but once in the forest the wind was not so bad. By the time we got to the two long uphills on the snowmobile trail we were stripping off layers.
