A dozen folks on the President's Day Weekend Tour skied Section 3 today, southbound. Most of the trail was fine, a workable crunchy base with a few inches of fluff on top. The rain had etched gullies right down to bare ground in spots, with just the fluff on top you could still ski over it, dry but scratchy. Sometimes getting into or out of the gullies was tricky, but since the base isn't very deep, neither were the gullies.
The reroute around the worst part of the stream bed worked quite well (I bet Tim would love some help widening next fall, look for workdays). The stream was still a problem in places because of the rain-damage.
South of the jct with the East Branch Trail we had to walk over several spots, and the two places close to the river and the drop past Searsburg Dam we not skiable either.
One warm or rainy day will mess up alot of this section, otherwise it will hold up for a while, with a few short exceptions. We were able to cross Vose Brook near Rt 9 with the missing bridge with no trouble. Be careful with the ice shelves along the Deerfield, we had one break off, no one got wet.
Pray for snow!
