We skied a portion of Section 3 on Sunday during the snowstorm. Started from the Somerset Road on the East Branch Trail (at the swinging bridge) and followed it to the Catamount, then north along the Deerfield River almost to the height 'o land. Trail was well broken out by snowshoers and further broken out by us during the snow. No blowdowns (except one right were we turned around), all streams could be crossed easily or with some minor acrobatics.

This is such a terrific section of trail! It's backcountry the entire way, much of it following the Deerfield River with lovely views of woodlands and meadows. Received about 5 inches of snow that day.

Today (2/2icon_cool.gif Pete Lane and I skied Section 3 and part of Section 4, breaking some trail for Sunday's Deerfield Valley Marathon (Sec 4 through 1 in a day, 35 miles, if we can). [/size:761d8c755f]

The area did get some rain, but not much, it didn't make a glassy crust, but it is a bit crunchy. Base is solid, 1 to 4 feet deep, the crust isn't very deep, and we made good time. The stream crossings were sometimes tricky, but managable with some exploring or other techniques, like skiing a log or building a jump. The turn for the day was the hop turn, though Pete did manage to snowplow some.[/size:761d8c755f]

The section where Jeff N. turned around is the really tricky section, made much harder by the blowdown in the middle. You can get around this part by going off to the east.

Jeff is right, this is beautiful section of trail, mostly easy skiing. Today was perfect day, but we hardly saw anyone out on the trail.
