The National Weather Service office in Albany posted a Winter Storm Warning for the southern Green Mountains Friday night, and Saturday monring there was 6 inches of powder on top of another 6 inches of crusty snow that fell Thursday!
Not much of a base, but definitely enough snow for skiing this mostly level stretch of the Catamount that follows an old railroad grade along the Deerfield River.
Left the plowed(!) parking lot on Lind Lane off Route 9 in Searsburg and skied north on the CT, which was broken out as far as the Searsburg Dam by fellow Brattleboronian Peter G. We were treated to several new steel truss bridges installed by the power company this fall: one at Vose Brook, one over the East Branch that replaced the old swinging bridge on the side trail to Somerset Road, and one on the CT by this trail junction. We continued about a half mile beyond this junction before turning around (about 3 miles up from Route 9).
A few logs, a few rocks, a few wet areas, but mostly superb skiing on a beautiful section of trail!
