Phil and I skied from Hazen's Notch Rd to Jay General Store on Sunday 2/20/2011 and it was awesome! There were a couple inches of fresh snow on top of a solid crust which made our waxless, metal edge skis perfect for the day's long journey. It went fairly quickly - we made brief stops along the way to check the guidebook and eat (a strong Northwest wind made it chilly out, even with the protection in the trees, so kept us moving to stay warm) - and completed the tour in 6 hours. Although most ski from Jay Pass to Hazen's Notch, we did it in reverse to be able to go down into Jay, and we were glad we did for both that reason and because the downhills to Hazen's Notch would have been challenging with alot of stream crossings/narrow snow bridges and unpredictable snow drifts on top of crusty surfaces. Stayed at Shaedy Acres and highly recommend these cute little cottages and wonderful hosts who helped us with the car drop. If you are up in that neck of the woods, we also recommend eating at the Belfry restaurant - great food, atmosphere, and entertaining local hangout. -- Audrey and Phil Huffman
