How about a day ski from Hazen's Notch to Jay Village? I'm not in a hurry, except to get it done this winter and complete my many year ski of the CT. When conditions permit, that is good snow and sufficient cold nights to freeze the many streams that cross this route, I hope to go. Around mid-December I will pick a date and a back-up. Conditions and daylight hours will be factors for go or no go. I'm looking for interested skiers to keep in the loop, and for snow reports.
The ski is long at 13.6 miles, will probably involve breaking trail and is challenging. It includes all of section 30 (6.5 miles) and the difficult part of 31 (7.1 miles). Descriptions are on the CTA website, summarized as follows:
With its combination of a dead-flat middle portion and steep, twisting, ascents/descents at the north end and about two miles in from the south end, this section requires an intermediate to advanced level of skill. Metal-edged backcountry skis are essential. Bring skins in case conditions are icy. This section is rugged and remote, with no road crossings. Make sure you are well equipped and have plenty of daylight.
From Jay Pass to the village can be difficult and strenuous if you are breaking trail in the usually very deep snow. Midway between Jay Pass and Jay Village there is a series of gullies that are tricky to navigate. Farther along there are some steep pitches on a side slope. Use metal-edged skis and bring skins.
We need a minimum of 3 cars to spot one at Jay Pass, an important safety contingency. We would meet at 8a.m. at the Jay store, then shuttle south to Jay Pass and the start at Hazen's Notch. Having a number of skiers would speed passage for the probable trail breaking required. The trip will not go in bad weather or with icy conditions. All skiers must respect the other members of the group. Back country skis and skins are necessary. This is typically the snowiest region of the CT hence should provide an awesome day.
I welcome any thoughts, especially from those who know this route.
Jill
P.S. I heard from Amy Diller that Section 30 received a good deal of trail work this year, so should provide easier transit than last winter.

I would love to join you for this ski if the timing works out.
Regardless, I definitely encourage those of you who like going up and down and sneaking in a few turns to join Jill. It's a beautiful section.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the great interest. I am going to try to do this ski on Sunday January 18th. That's on Presidents' Day weekend, so maybe some of you can make a weekend of it up in the NEK.
I'd appreciate you e-mailing me at "jillaspinall@alumni.uwaterloo.ca" if you are still interested, and let me know how the date works for you. If either the snow or enough folks' schedules don't work, I will pick another day. In any case, those interested could then stay in e-mail contact to get a day that works.
I think my husband & I would be driving up that day from Montpelier. Hopefully we can get some carpooling going on, and still have enough cars.
Looking forward to hearing from you and doing it! Jill
P.S. The plan would be as stated in the original post. Meet at the Jay store at 8:00 a.m.

Hi Jill, just want to give you a update on the trail conditions. We skied the upper part of section 31,it is starting to recover from the thaw. The trail below shallowbrook will need at least a foot of snow.I would think by the time you plan on your ski the trail should be ready.Dave
